Yesterday, the Princess Royal paid a visit to Haywood Hospital and met with doctors, nurses, other staff and patients to learn of the clinical trials being done to assist those with joint-related problems. Princess Anne was shown a number of occupational therapy research projects currently in the works during her visit.

Her visit took place as part of the Burslem facility’s International Clinical Trials Day. The aim of this day is to draw attention to and raise awareness about how important research is to healthcare.

Princess Anne is patron of the College of Occupational Therapists. During her visit, she met with researchers working to help those who suffer with various forms of arthritis. She observed sessions which showcased specific exercises and how sufferers might protect their joints. To round out the session, the Princess asked staff and patients what some of the benefits were of using the Specialist gloves, splints and seats that were also available.

The research done at the hospital also gives occupational therapists in North Staffordshire more options for those who suffer with joint problems. The Princess met staff working on creating gloves for arthritis sufferers that increase compression around the hands.

Stewart Jarvie of Bentilee suffers from rheumatoid arthritis in all his joints, said: “It all started in 2004 and can be very painful. This is the third trial that I have taken part in and am happy to be involved with anything that may help my condition.”

Her Royal Highness also met with researchers who are looking in to the benefits of educating patients of exercises for those with hand and joint problems and joint protection, including Krysia Dziedzic, Professor of musculoskeletal therapies at Keele University.

Dr Jon Packham is an associate medical director at the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Partnership NHS Trust. He said: “This has been a lovely chance to show the good work that we do. Research is undertaken alongside the daily work that staff do and so it is nice for them to show what they have been doing. It changes lives and helps people live independently.”

Princess Anne ended her tour by addressing everyone present.

“There is a real enthusiasm for research here and that encourages others,” she said.

“Thank you for your support here at Haywood and across the partnership – it’s much appreciated.”
